Terracotta, the porous red-fired clay, has a long and rich history. You probably know it from the well-known terracotta pots, which are available in different variants. But traditionally, terracotta is mainly used for roof tiles and feeding in countries with warm climates. Because it absorbs less heat than other materials, it cools the house. Terracotta was therefore the perfect material for this. Hence, Terracotta is often associated with interiors with a Mediterranean touch.
Do you also love Terracotta? We show you how to use it in your interior and we show you how to combine Terracotta with other colors. We do this of course for fun ideas and beautiful inspiration examples.
Terracotta color
In addition to the porous red-fired clay, Terracotta has also become a real popular color for the interior. It is a beautiful rusty natural earth tone between orange and brown, which gives any interior a cozy and warm look. That is why Terracotta is a very versatile color, which is a very good idea in both winter and summer.
To combine
Terracotta is a color that you can also combine very nicely with other colors and materials. This applies to warm colors such as red, brown or, for example, yellow ocher, but also cold colors look beautiful, such as blue and gray. Below you will find three mood boards, where you can see very nicely how Terracotta can be combined.
Terracotta and pink
The first color combination we show is terracotta and pink. A trendy combination that we see everywhere, and results in a beautiful, elegant and feminine atmosphere. Do you want to make it a bit lighter? Then add some neutral tones, such as beige and white.
Terracotta and gray
Terracotta also makes a particularly beautiful combination with the contrasting gray. The result of combining these two colors is very contemporary and elegant, and may be easier to dose than other combinations. This applies to dark gray, but it is even more beautiful with light gray. For example, do you have gray walls? Then you can use Terracotta to add more heat to the room.
Terracotta and blue
Terracotta and blue may sound a bit strange, but you will be amazed at how beautifully these two colors combine. You often see it in Moroccan houses and riads, for example. Because it contrasts nicely, you can create a very interesting graphic effect.
Mediterranean restaurant Omar’s place
A beautiful interior, where Terracotta is the main color, is the interior of the Omar’s Place restaurant in London. A lively Mediterranean restaurant and bar with creative tapas cuisine, a contemporary cocktail bar and a cozy, ‘local-hangout’ atmosphere.
The beautiful interior design was realized by the designers Sella Concept and Wilson Holloway. The result is a bold, warm and distinct aesthetic, with polished terracotta walls, multi-colored terrazzo tiles, scalloped wood slats on the walls, wooden floors and super beautiful suede sofas. Terracotta and blue dominate the color palette, while clean gold lines provide an elegant contrast to the organic curves and soft contours of the space.

The terracotta ceiling is a beautiful combination with the gray-blue walls, the wooden floor and the blue sofa.
