Today we take you to Sweden, where we will take a look at a super nicely decorated living room. It is the living room of an apartment from 1897, which has recently been completely renovated. The living room is a wonderfully light space, with sleek white walls and a beautiful warm wooden floor. Although it is not very large, it is still possible to set up a large, cozy sitting area, a large TV cabinet, a dining table, a bookcase and a nice workplace. They have used the String cabinets !
Nils Strinning was a Swedish architect who rose to fame in the mid-twentieth century. Born in Kramfors in 1917, he was part of a group of designers who laid the foundation for what we now call Scandinavian design.
In 1949, Sweden’s largest publishing house, Bonnier, realized that if it wanted the Swedes to buy books, they needed a place to store them in a fun way. That is why they organized a design competition. Bonnier received 194 entries to the competition, but the design by Nils and his wife Kajsa was a clear winner: affordable, easy to assemble and super versatile.
In the 1970s, the brand fell into a dip, where production was even halted for a period. But since Swedish entrepreneurs Peter Erlandsson and Pär Josefsson had revived the brand in 2005, the String cabinets have become indispensable in the world of Scandinavian design.
The versatile character is one of the main strengths of the String cabinet. You see that perfectly reflected in this living room. The large wall is fully furnished with modules from the String System collection . One closed cabinet has been used on which the television is placed. The rest of the cabinet consists mainly of open shelves. A workplace has been set up on the right, realized with the wall cupboard with table.
The only element that is not part of the String system is the dining table. They had a special wooden table made, which can easily be folded up against the wall. That way, a lot of space can be saved in this small living room. The table has only one leg, because an element of a String cabinet is used as the second leg. Well done, right?
Cozy sitting area
The sitting area is arranged against the other wall. There you will find a nice large carpet, on which the corner sofa is placed. They opted for the nice NORSBORG sofa from IKEA. The round Muuto Around coffee table is also super nice, matching the round wooden legs of the sofa.
The wall above the sofa is decorated with a cool green wall lamp and two frames next to each other. And on the wall next to the doorway, a collage has been created with four large framed vintage posters of animals.
